I’m a home inspector by day, and when I am not inspecting homes I’m an absolute DIY fanatic. I fix just about everything myself. From our fleet of inspection vehicles and our family vehicles, to leaking toilets, kitchen renovations, and even custom Christmas gifts. In a former life, I even fixed helicopters. If this sounds like the dad in your life, and you have no idea what to get him this Fathers Day, check out this curated list of the gift ideas for the ultimate DIY Dads.

  1. An Oscillating tool – Oscillating tools have a head that vibrates very quickly and has a variety of attachments for a seemingly endless amount of jobs. Make quick work of cutting holes in drywall, flush cutting dowels or any other “proud” wood pieces, cutting the heads off bolts, detailed sanding, removing rust or paint, cleaning off large areas of adhesive  and lots more. I recently used one to cut the top off an oil drain pan because I dropped a screw in it. Corded tools generally have more power, but cordless are definitely my go to.  Don’t go cheap. Remember this is for a DIY fanatic.

2. Xtend and climb ladder – This ladder is small enough to fit in a closet, extends up to 12.5 feet (taller for other models), and is durable enough for any job. We use these for our inspections and when I looked it up for you, Amazon said I have bought it 6 times. I’ve never had issues with them, and they’re absolutely my preferred ladder if I don’t need my 28 foot ladder. There are a ton of knock offs online, but I would not trust anything but the real thing.

3. Miter Saw Stand – This is hands down the best miter saw stand on the market. You know the dad in your life needs a miter saw stand if he has a small work space and does most of his wood cuts outside, if he’s always asking you to hold one end of a piece of wood while he cuts it, or if he just likes all the coolest tools. I bought this one for my father in law this past Christmas, and if I had not already built myself an amazing one, I would have bought myself one of these. There is a good chance he already owns a miter saw and this is best upgrade he’s been waiting for.

4. Bluetooth Hearing Protection – Let’s move on to some more mildly priced gifts and some safety gifts. We all know a lot of men are reckless and don’t always practice safe working habits like they should. We mean well. Sometimes we want the cool safety gear that we would actually use, but something shinier and usually more expensive catches our attention. Enter you. Grab the dad in your life some bluetooth hearing protection. They protect his hearing while allowing him to listen to his favorite tunes. It might even be a gift for you if he’s constantly blaring his tunes in his garage. The only downside is it will be nearly impossible to get a hold of him while he has these on.

5. A Pick Up Tool – Don’t let the low price of this tool lower your enthusiasm. It is incredibly satisfying to have this tool on hand when you need it. From fishing out a rink lost in the sink drain, to retrieving a bolt dropped in the engine bay, this tool is a lifesaver. It has a magnetic end and a claw end to grab just about anything you’ve dropped in a small dark place.

6. Small Parts Organizer – One thing dads like me never seem to have enough of is organizers. My mom picked this one up for me last year, and I filled in a couple of days. Here’s a tip, grab two, or four, or seventy two. They snap together and make for the ultimate portable small parts organizer.

7. Retro Mini Fridge – Ok. Maybe your dad has all the tools, but does he have a mini fridge for his garage? Nothing puts me in a good mood like cutting wood, and drinking a cold beer…until I measured once and cut twice that is. Truth is, I am still going back in the house for my cold beer, and if any of my friends are reading this, I need this fridge in my life.
